Merlyn and Jean Carter
Founders of Carter Air Services Ltd and pioneers in Northern tourism
Tourism pioneers in Canada’s north, Merlyn and Jean Carter founded Carter Air Services Ltd. in 1962.
To supplement their young aviation company, the Carters recognized the potential in flying sports fisherman to untouched lakes in the Canadian north. At their own expense, they travelled to sports shows in the United States, becoming tireless promoters of the Northwest Territories as a sports fisherman’s dream.
The Carters helped set up a number of remote fishing camps before focusing their efforts on a central camp at Nonacho Lake. Over the course of 40 years of dedicated service in the tourism industry, Merlyn also flew tourist sightseers and naturalists to Nahanni National Park and mentored dozens of aspiring young pilots while raising a family in Hay River.
