Hon. Charles Lapointe
Former Minister of State for Small Business & Tourism, CEO, Tourisme Montréal
First elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1974, the Hon. Charles Lapointe held several portfolios throughout his 10 years in office, including that of Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism. Returning to private life in 1984, he became president of International Aeroplane Company followed by vice-president of business development for Lavalin.
He was appointed president and CEO of Tourisme Montréal in 1989 and has been a devoted champion of the city ever since. During his tenure, Montréal has become one of the most sought-after international destinations for both leisure and business travellers.
In addition to his commitment to Montréal, Charles has been a strong supporter of the tourism sector throughout Canada. He has worked closely with the Tourism Industry Association of Canada and in 2002 was appointed board chair for the Canadian Tourism Commission.
He led the organization through an important transition period and helped guide the Canada brand initiative. Charles’ leadership, vision and charisma are well known throughout the tourism sector.
